Snapshots – 2018 winter sneeuwpret

March 8, 2018 by The Weekend Traveller No Comments
I could smell spring in the air. It’s 10 degrees, sunny, blue skies and feels like 10-degrees. (In the Netherlands we have this gevoelstemperatuur, which literally translates to “feel temperature”. Depending on the wind, gevoelstemperatuur can be twice of thrice as cold as real temperature). Last week when the ‘beast from the east” passed by, it suddenly felt like -20 degrees in many parts of the country, particularly in Rotterdam where the hard, icy North Sea winds blows like a hurricane on stormy days.

But I am not complaining. Not really, because there was a lot of snow this year. You see, in this part of Europe, winter usually means rain and heavy storms, so when Netherlands become Narnia-land, we frolic  in the snow like people from the tropics.

Every year the Dutch from the North of the country, in Friesland particularly, are wishing for a real winter so that they can hold their ice skating competition (Elfstedentocht). And every year, their hearts get broken because it hardly gets freezing cold here.

But this year was an exception. In early December the first snow storm came and blanketed the whole country in immaculate white powder. It lasted for only two days but nobody minded. There still wasn’t any Elfstedentoch  but many canals froze, and people went crazy skating on natural ice especially in Amsterdam.

Barcelona, Portrait of a City

August 20, 2017 by The Weekend Traveller No Comments

In the light of the recent terror attack in Barcelona, I look back to the wonderful time I spent in the city. Barcelona is my second home in Europe. My family and closest friends live there. Whenever I had to fly somewhere for a weekend trip, Barcelona is on top of the list.

Barcelona is always warm, always gay. Even if you skip the tourist attractions, there’s always a spot in the city that’s typical Spain, unique to Barcelona – a random tapas bar, a bench with a view of Sagrada Familia in the distance, a coffee shop in the middle of a plaza, inside the church, outside on the beach.

I refuse to give in to the fear that terrorism wants to cage us in. So pack your bags, go visit. Barcelona awaits….

Snapshots: Scenes from home

October 23, 2015 by The Weekend Traveller 8 Comments

There are really very simple things I look forward to when going back to the Philippines – bonding with my big family, eating fresh food (literally just caught from the sea or plucked from the garden) and breathing in the fresh air of my island home.

Snapshots: Algarve, Portugal

October 8, 2015 by The Weekend Traveller No Comments

Unedited and straight from the iPhone photos of our long weekend in Algarve, Portugal in November 2012. The weather was rainy but it gave way to sunny afternoons. We hired a car and toured Faro, Silves, Albufeira, Sagres and Lagos.

Snapshots – Weekend in Dresden

February 11, 2015 by The Weekend Traveller 1 Comment

42 days.

That’s exactly how long I’ve been home since our Christmas holiday in the Philippines. And I think I am already suffering cabin fever. My feet are itchy. I want to board a plane and land in a city where they don’t speak English or Dutch. I want to see the sun. I want to eat in a nice restaurant where I couldn’t understand the menu. I want to getaway for the weekend.

But right now, I don’t have time.

So here I am looking back to the same time last year when I decided to buy a ticket on a whim and spend the Valentine weekend in Dresden to watch The Gregorian in live concert.

What welcomed me in Dresden was unexpected.  The city was covered in snow. I was alone and I had all the time to do all I wanted. I didn’t do much sight seeing but a lot of walking. And taking photos. And drinking gluhwein to my heart’s content. And watching the saddest classical concert in exchange for dinner.

I didn’t have time to blog about the trip. Maybe one of these days. Or next winter. There was no blogging scheduled for this week actually. But my weekend in Dresden was a beautiful one so allow me to share it with you even through these photos.

European alleyways, who doesn’t love them?

I am looking forward to my next weekend trip. Any suggestions?
