Totale ontspanning: Erawan Thai Massage

Whhat exactly is a Thai massage? Well, it’s a systematic kneading and pinching of your sore muscles as well as pulling, twisting and bending of your ligaments in various and sometimes in the most awkward ways. It involves pain – as little or as much – as you can handle. If you are a masochist or you simply want a deep-tissue massage, the Thai way is the best option. But I mean the real Thai thing, not the one with the “happy ending”.

How would you know if a Thai massage is real? Look at the bed. It is usually a hard, flat bed on the floor to allow the masseuse enough room to move around.

I’ve been going to Erawan since 2014. She used to only offer home massage at her former house in Schiedam. She now owns a wellness salon in Bleiswijk, which she operates together her with her mother and another masseuse. Despite having to travel half an hour to her salon, every session with her (that doesn’t sound right, does it?) is worth every single euro. She’s the only masseuse that really loosen my tight, painful muscles.

I’d have a one-hour massage at Erawan’s at least once a month, twice during hectic months. This week though, I decided to have a two-hour session to give my muscles a much needed pampering for the Rotterdam Marathon this Sunday.

Erawan charges €45/hour and €90 for two hours, pretty much in the same range as other less impressive massage rates in the Netherlands. Between a very expensive sports massage and Erawan’s, I’d very recommend the latter.
